Life without sugar is much sweeter

Brown sugar, white sugar

So my naturopath has told me for years that I should cut out all sugar & refined carbohydrates.

Do you think I listened?  Hell, no.  I would try for a day or so & it would just be way too hard.

The only thing that is different this attempt (which has so far lasted for nearly TWO weeks!) is that I have been following principles from the Dukan Diet.  Yes, that crazy doctor who says we should eat massive amounts of meat & eggs; the reincarnation of the Atkins Diet for 2010.

Now, eating a cow a day doesn’t actually appeal to me all that much.  But I have certainly increased my protein intake.  I’ve also cut out bread, pasta, rice, potato & sugar.  It’s basically a WHITE-FREE diet.

It has been much easier this time, as the protein keeps you full, curbs your appetite & pretty much stops all the cravings for mid afternoon chocolate bars & after dinner desserts.  It’s a miracle!

Best of all, I’ve lost some of those pesky kilos.  My stomach is no longer bloated.   Hurrah!  My skin is clear (although I have been using a new beta-hydroxy lotion).  I’ve been exercising for half an hour every day, even if it is often at 10.30 at night.  I feel really good.  Which is great considering for most of this year, I’ve felt really crap.

Most people who know me realise that I am a person prone to passionate exuberance at the beginning of undertaking a new project.  This quickly wanes into laziness, half-heartedness & eventually results in a complete relapse into previous habits, where the scale of my inital excitement is barely remembered.  Yes, you all know me too well.

We shall see…we shall see…it has after all be nearly TWO weeks…a personal record!

Good on you!!! 2 weeks is fantastic!

I’m in the middle of reading Sweet Poison by David Gillespie (http://sweetpoison.com.au/) and am thinking of trying to kick my sugar habit too.

The thought of giving up sends shivers down my spine but I will be very interested to see what effect it has on my physical and mental health!

Keep up the good work xx

PS: It’s Sunny from TIW :)

Thanks, Fiona! I’ve seen that book- it looks good- I might have to try to read it! Well, as a person of limited self-control, I have to say that so far this no sugar business has been much easier than I ever expected. And I feel so much better. Go for it!

Well done! My natuarpath told me yesterday I had to give up or at least cut down on sugar and carbs. Today was my first day. I limited myself to 1 cup of tea with one sugar first thing ( I would normally have about 4 a day) and then this afternoon I really felt like something at about 4pm so I had a hot milk with a teaspoon of honey, which I guess is just sugar anyway. Have you got any tips for the late afternoon dip in energy? Any other tips would also be gratefully received!

      Hey Sophie.
I know what you mean about the mid-afternoon energy dip : (
I have found that eating plenty of protein with lots of salad at lunch does help. And sometimes a cup of tea (with no sugar) seems to tide me over too.
But- & this is a bit cheeky- if you crave something sweet in the afternoon, Darrel Lea do a decent chocolate bar with very low carbs & no sugar! Mmmmm. You can also try health food shops.
